On 12 January 2023, Ambassador Tanee Sangrat met with Christine M. Warnke, Ph.D., Chief of International Affairs and Protocol Officer, Washington, D.C., to discuss collaboration between the Embassy and D.C. in organizing a Thai Festival on the National Mall in July 2023 and incorporating activities to celebrate the 61st  Anniversary of Bangkok–D.C. Sister City Partnership into a series of celebrations for the 190th Anniversary of Thailand – U.S. Diplomatic Relations this year in Washington, D.C.

Ambassador Tanee proposed possible areas of cooperation that Bangkok could share knowledge and best practices with Washington, D.C., including sustainable waste management (upcycled materials from trash, composting programs, zero waste information), while Christine mentioned the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group where Mayors from all over the world gather to discuss climate change, including Bangkok Governor and D.C. Mayor, and suggested that D.C. could share its success of health innovation center.

In addition, Ambassador Tanee also emphasized the increasing trade between Thailand and the U.S., as well as how the local Thai population could support beneficial activities organized for the local communities, especially Asian-Americans and youth projects that Mayor Bowser has prioritized. Christine praised the idea and is interested in Bangkok’s environmental projects as they would be very beneficial for Washington, D.C. She agreed to bring these issues to the attention of relevant Washington, D.C. agencies and continue further discussion with the Embassy in detail.
