In its quest to strengthen national energy security, Thailand is turning to the United States. Thai energy conglomerate PTT Public Company Limited has signed a 20-year agreement to purchase 2 million metric tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually from an Alaskan project developed by American firm Glenfarne in partnership with Alaska LNG.
“Glenfarne and Alaska LNG are pleased that PTT and the Thai government recognize the strategic security, cost-efficiency, and stability benefits offered by the Alaska LNG project,” said Adam Prestidge, President of Glenfarne Alaska LNG.
Earlier this year, H.E. Pichai Chunhavajira, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of Thailand, stated that the Kingdom plans to import more gas from overseas - particularly from the United States - to help balance bilateral trade.
PTT is Thailand’s largest publicly traded energy company (majority-owned by the Ministry of Finance) and supplies the majority of the Kingdom’s oil and gas. It is also expanding into electric‑vehicle batteries and retail outlets.
Thailand’s domestic natural gas reserves in the Gulf of Thailand are declining, though exploration of new blocks continues. The government has adopted policies to diversify energy sources and reduce reliance on Middle Eastern petroleum.
“Recent events in the Middle East underscore the need for Alaska LNG - delivered from a secure, stable, and abundant source without passing through potentially contested waters,” said Brendan Duval, CEO and Founder of Glenfarne.
Glenfarne is leading a US $44 billion pipeline project - initially championed under the Trump administration - expected to deliver approximately 3.5 billion cubic feet of gas per day from Alaska’s North Slope to international markets.
