Thailand’s cabinet has approved US $1.2 billion (≈ 40 billion Baht) to support its bid to host a Formula One Street Race in Bangkok in 2028, signaling the Kingdom’s commitment to landing a spot on the prestigious global motorsport calendar.

In late May, The New York Times noted that Thailand is a leading contender to join the F1 calendar, with a Bangkok street-race proposal in progress. F1 CEO and President Stefano Domenicali met with Prime Minister H.E. Paetongtarn Shinawatra in March to discuss adding Thailand to the circuit, and F1 team members conducted follow-up visits in April 2025.

Domenicali stated, “We want to develop the relationship (with Thailand). We are working for a midterm Grand Prix on a semi‑permanent facility in the city.” He emphasized that financial viability remains a key consideration.

To demonstrate its seriousness, the Thai Government allocated the substantial funding as proof of its intent.

“Our country will have world‑class competition in the next two to three years,” said government spokesperson Jirayu Houngsub, expressing confidence that Thailand will surprise skeptics.

A 5.7 km (3.54 mile) street circuit is proposed around Chatuchak Park, near the popular weekend market. If approved, the inaugural race would occur in 2028 under a five‑year contract, potentially extending through 2032. Tourism Minister Sorawong Thienthong confirmed the budget as approximately 40 billion Baht.
