Amid a series of trade deals and diplomatic declarations, the most significant development was the signing of a declaration that is a pathway to peace between the two countries. With President Donald J. Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, as Chair of ASEAN, as witnesses, the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia formally endorsed a pact to end their recent border conflict and to work together in restoring stability and harmony.
“Today, we take a concrete step towards peace,” said Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul of Thailand, as signatures were affixed to the document in the sidelines of a summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 26 October 2025.
The declaration, Prime Minister Anutin stated, “opens a new chapter in bilateral relations” and “reflects our commitment to resolving differences peacefully, in full respect of sovereignty and territorial integrity.” He added that the declaration “will lay the foundation for lasting peace and mark the beginning of a renewed partnership between our two nations.”
Before commenting on the agreement, President Trump paid tribute to Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother who passed away peacefully at the age of 93 on 24 October 2025. He expressed his deepest condolences to His Majesty the King of Thailand, the leader and the people of Thailand on the passing of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother. “Sadly, the Queen Mother of Thailand has just passed away. I send my condolences to the Great People of Thailand,” the President said, leading a chorus of world leaders in memorializing Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother. Referring to Her Majesty as “the embodiment of dignity, kindness and grace,” the President further stated, “Today, we honor the memory by bringing the blessing of peace to the nation she dearly loved.”
The U.S. Embassy in Thailand issued a statement calling Her Majesty “a compelling communicator of the uniqueness of Thai culture,” and a “true cultural bridge between the two nations and their peoples.”
President Trump then continued by commending Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul of Thailand for the courage and statesmanship in choosing peace over conflict and in committing to the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accords. The President had played an active and instrumental role in facilitating the negotiations over recent months, a role that was appreciated by Thailand and the region.
“This is a momentous day for all the people of Southeast Asia as we sign a historic agreement to end the military conflict between Cambodia and Thailand,” President Trump said during the signing ceremony.
Armed clashes between the neighboring nations erupted earlier this year along the Thai-Cambodian border area – clashes that Thailand did not want and did not initiate, but which unfortunately led to Thai civilian casualties, including women and children.
Building on negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia through established bilateral mechanisms, the peace declaration between the two countries will hopefully de-escalate tensions and help stabilize the situation. There are commitments to cooperate to demine the affected border areas, to remove heavy weapons from those areas and to fight transnational crime.
As the ceremony concluded, Prime Minister Anutin expressed his gratitude to President Donald J. Trump for “his personal dedication to peace between our two countries” and for his leadership in guiding the region toward a new era of stability and cooperation.
