On 16 November 2024, Mr. Vasu Srivarathonbul, Counsellor and Head of Consular Section, represented the Royal Thai Embassy in the Loy Krathong Festival 2024 organized by Mrs. Thera Clark, President of the Thai American Association of Washington, D.C. at Homewood Suites by Hilton, Herndon, Virginia. Mr. Sean K. O'Neill, the former U.S. Consul General to Chiang Mai, and Mrs. Kelia Cummins, the upcoming U.S. Consul General to Chiang Mai, and their spouses attended the festival along with members of Thai Community and Americans. The participants Loy Krathong or floated the lotus-shaped vessels together. Performers from Thai Dancing arts school of Wat Thai Washington, D.C. also performed at the festival.  

 

Thailand has adopted Loy Krathong tradition since ancient time. Loy Krathong usually takes place on the full moon evening of the 12th lunar month. Loy Krathong means floating the vessels, which are usually shape like lotus flower. People usually light incense sticks and candles before floating the Krathongs. It is a ceremony to honor the Goddess of the river. Loy Krathong Festival has been inscribed on the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List in the domain of social practices, rituals and festive events since 2011.
