On 20 June 2025, H.E. Dr. Suriya Chindawongse, Ambassador of Thailand to the U.S. and Chairman of ASEAN Committee in Washington, participated a panel discussion titled “Shaping Tomorrow: Advancing the Digital Economy in ASEAN,” hosted by the U.S.-ASEAN Business Council (USABC) at DACOR Bacon House in Washington, D.C.
Ambassador Suriya was also joined by the U.S. Ambassadors to the Philippines and Viet Nam to share insights and exchanged views on the development of the digital economy in ASEAN, including updates on the negotiation of the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA). The event brought together representatives from the U.S. Government, including the Department of State and Department of Commerce, leading U.S. technology and digital companies, as well as ASEAN Embassies in Washington, D.C.
The U.S. Government has continued to support the DEFA negotiations. Once finalized, DEFA will become the world’s first regional digital economy agreement, with the potential to increase the value of ASEAN’s digital economy to USD 2 trillion by 2030. This will open significant new opportunities for U.S. businesses in the region.
