Olivia‘s Reflection on TANIP Experience

Oli1

Sawadee ka and hello everyone. My name is Olivia Ruderman. I was born in Bangkok to a Thai mother and American father, and raised in San Francisco. I am a rising sophomore at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, majoring in honors Political Science, and plan to attend Law School after graduation.

I am so honored to have had the experience of working as a TANIP fellow in DC this summer, and interning at the office of the Honorable James Moylan, the Congressional Delegate from Guam. The knowledge and experience I have gained during my internship has truly been invaluable.

First and foremost, I would like to extend my deepest appreciation to Ambassador Sangrat, DCM Chuliepote, P’Jao, P’Jack, P’Sart, P’Aim, and P’John, alongside the other dedicated members of the Royal Thai Embassy for guiding me through this program. Your support and guidance have helped shape my understanding of diplomacy and international relations. Working with you has allowed me to connect with my Thai roots, fostering a stronger sense of Thai identity, cultural appreciation, and pride in my heritage.

Next, I would like to thank Mary Sue, Amanda Earls, and the rest of the US-Asia Institute for providing me with the opportunity to help foster positive relations between the United States and Asia. This organization allowed me to engage with policymakers and advocates who tirelessly work to promote regional cooperation and understanding.

Lastly, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to Maria Bello, Bobby Shringi, Matthew Steil, Chris Lukas, Hannah D’Avanzo and the rest of the Office of Congressman James Moylan. Working alongside his team has been a transformative experience. I have witnessed firsthand the impact of policy-making on the lives of constituents and all Americans. This office’s dedication and passion has inspired me to pursue my studies in political science with even greater enthusiasm.

During my first week in DC, USAI arranged speakers from various branches of the US government. Their insightful presentations gave me a profound understanding of how our government works, inspiring me to explore potential career paths in public service. It was an enlightening and motivating experience, leaving me eager to contribute meaningfully to our two nations.

During my time working at Congressman Moylan’s Office, I had the privilege to immerse myself in various roles within his team. From answering phone calls from constituents, to giving tours of the Capitol, I have gained a wealth of knowledge and experience. Shadowing the member's scheduler, Maria Bello, provided me with a firsthand understanding of the meticulous planning involved in organizing the Congressman's crucial diplomatic affairs and managing his demanding schedule.

Along with the other interns, I helped arrange Guam’s 79th Liberation Day event, which took a great amount of planning and effort. We all worked very hard alongside Congressman Moylan’s diligent team, producing a very well-attended and successful event.

I also enjoyed working with our communication’s director, Hannah D’Avanzo. I was able to help write speeches for the Congressman, prepare him for press interviews and formulate questions for committee meetings.

Towards the end of my internship with the Congressman, I had the amazing opportunity to propose a bill known as the C.H.I.L.D. Act of 2023 that addresses criminal sentences for human traffickers of minors. Collaborating with the office's exceptional legislative team, another intern and I conducted extensive research, drafted the proposal, and formatted the bill. We also reached out to other congressional offices and organizations to secure co-sponsorship and endorsements. I am happy to say our efforts paid off and the C.H.I.L.D. Act of 2023 will be proposed following the August recess. As a young college student, I feel an overwhelming sense of pride and excitement to have made a positive and meaningful contribution to our country

At the Congressman’s office, I witnessed an extraordinary team. They worked tirelessly until late, even until 3:00 am, strategizing votes for the NDAA, pushing through COFA agreements, and always prioritizing the wellbeing of Guam's citizens. Their dedication, passion, public spirit, and good nature left a profound impression on me and I cannot thank them enough.

During my time in DC, I've come to realize the significance of nurturing strong ties between Thailand and the US. As allies and friends, both countries are committed to further enhancing their already excellent and enduring bi-lateral cooperation. In fact, this year commemorates an impressive 190 years of diplomatic relations. In the future, I intend to continue to build upon this long standing partnership no matter where I am, fostering mutual growth, understanding, and prosperity. Let us forge ahead, united in our pursuit of shared goals and a brighter future for both our countries.

Thank you everyone so much again.
