Thailand is caring for two “kings of the jungle” after a team of Thai veterinarians successfully nursed back to health two severely ill white lions rescued from a casino in a neighboring country during a military operation along the border.

The two lions, nicknamed Merry and Christmas, were suffering from serious intestinal illnesses when troops raided the casino following attacks on Thailand. The casino was located within a complex described by international law enforcement officials as a large-scale scam center operated by transnational criminal organizations.

The white lions, which are not native to Southeast Asia, were transferred to the Thai Government’s Khao Son Wildlife Breeding Station in Ratchaburi on Christmas Day, hence their nicknames. While lions are rare in Thailand, the country has a substantial tiger population, giving veterinarians extensive experience in treating large cats. The animals have been receiving intensive care, including intravenous fluids, antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, pain relief medication, and nutritional supplements.

At the casino, the lions and three bears were found confined in cages, severely underweight, dehydrated, and distressed. Thai officials assessed that the animals were in critical condition and ordered their immediate rescue.

Authorities say the criminal groups operating the complex specialize in online and telephone scams that target victims worldwide, often using trafficked individuals forced to participate in fraudulent schemes. Security officials also report that the groups are involved in drug and weapons smuggling.

Civil society organizations combating wildlife trafficking note that criminal networks involved in smuggling drugs, weapons, and people are frequently linked to illegal wildlife trade as well. Wildlife trafficking is estimated to generate billions of dollars annually. While the problem was once widespread in Thailand, authorities have made significant efforts to curb the illegal trade and have achieved notable success, though they acknowledge that continued vigilance is necessary.
