In another example of Thailand’s increasing investments in America, EGCO, the Kingdom’s largest private electricity provider, announced it is investing in a wind farm and a solar farm in the United States with a 49 percent stake in a subsidiary of Apex Pinnacle II.
“The investment in the Pinnacle II Portfolio will support the continued balanced expansion of EGCO Group's position in the U.S. power market,” said Jiraporn Sirikum, President of EGCO. She added the move is a significant step toward the goal of having renewable energy assets account for 30 percent of the company's total assets within five years.
EGCO, or the Electricity Generating Public Company Ltd., was the first independent power producer in Thailand, founded in 1992 by the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) as one of the government’s first concrete moves to privatize the Kingdom’s power industry.
EGCO is listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand. Apex Pinnacle II Member is an affiliate of Apex Clean Energy Holdings LLC.
The solar farm, named Wheatsborough Solar, is under construction in Ohio with a planned capacity of 125MW. It was built to serve 21,000 households a year in the midwestern American state.
The other investment is in Downeast Wind supplies clean energy to more than 37,000 households a year in Maine and should help the state achieve its target of 80 percent of energy from renewable sources by 2030.
Downeast Wind operates within the ISO New England (ISO-NE) power market. ISO-NE is a wholesale electricity marketplace for the six states: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.
