On May 23, 2024, Ms. Chuliepote Isarankura Na Ayudhaya, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. and Royal Thai Embassy officials attended a concert performance by the Somapa Thai Dance Company at the Coolidge Auditorium, Library of Congress, Washington, D.C. The event was organized by the American Folklife Center in celebration of the Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage (AAPI) Month, and as a part of the Library’s Homegrown Concert Series and Live! at the Library.

In her remarks, CDA Chuliepote highlighted the long-standing partnership and alliance between Thailand and the U.S., which is rooted in people-to-people ties, and the significant role played by the Thai and Thai-American communities in the U.S. in fostering cross-cultural understanding and appreciation. She thanked to the Somapa Dance Company for their efforts as Thai “Cultural Ambassadors”, promoting Thai classical and traditional music and performances across the U.S.

The program presented traditional Thai music and selected Thai dance numbers. The group showcased newly and innovatively arranged music numbers that were performed on different occasions and for functions in Thai society. Approximately 500 attendees enjoyed and appreciated the performance.

The Library of Congress has preserved a collection of Thai musical instruments presented by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great during His Majesty’s first visit to the country in 1960.
