Another week, another award for Thailand as a travel destination. Conde Nast Traveler has named Doi Inthanon mountain in Chiang Mai Province as one of its Seven Wonders of Southeast Asia in its latest edition.

“Located in the northern highlands of Thailand, Doi Inthanon National Park is the picture of combined natural grandeur and cultural richness. Part of the Himalayan foothills, it is home to Thailand’s highest mountain peak which rises over 2,500 meters (8,200 feet) above sea level,” Conde Nast Traveler wrote.

Chiang Mai is the most popular province in northern Thailand among foreign and local tourists. The region is home to many of the Kingdom’s most lush and stunning landscapes, along with a kaleidoscope of ethnic and tribal people who roam across its mountains and valleys.

Known locally as “the roof of Thailand,” just about everyone who visits northern Thailand hikes at least part of the way up Doi Inthanon. While there are many hiking trails that make Doi Inthanon “ideal for hiking,” according to Conde Nast Traveler, there is also a well-paved road that allows visitors to drive to the mountain’s peak.

Doi Inthanon’s “altitude, along with the many waterfalls in the area, creates a misty cloud atmosphere in its forests, hill-tribe villages, and even the modern Buddhist temples and pagodas built there,” the magazine wrote.

The relatively cool year-round weather provides a welcome break from Thailand’s typical tropical heat. And along with serving as a haven for wildlife, the variety of beautiful and sometimes rare birds makes the National Park a top spot in the Kingdom for birdwatchers.

“Birdwatching and wildlife spotting also come with the territory. Aside from scenic natural views, the spectacular flower gardens thriving around the Buddhist pagodas are also a sight to behold,” the magazine wrote.
