Thailand is strong when it comes to nuclear security. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) stated that Thailand has a robust framework for detecting and responding to nuclear and radioactive materials, following an in-country assessment conducted this month.

“We welcome Thailand’s efforts and commitment to enhance the national nuclear security regime, which is also reflected in the country’s continued cooperation with the IAEA,” said Elena Buglova, Director of the IAEA’s Division of Nuclear Security.

While Thailand neither possesses nuclear weapons nor produces nuclear material for weapons, its nuclear security regime remains crucial for two key reasons.

First, some medical institutions produce small amounts of radioactive materials for research purposes, while certain industries produce or use radioactive materials like Cobalt-60 or Cesium-137 in their manufacturing processes. Ensuring the security of these materials is essential for public safety.

Second, Thailand’s strategic geographic location, along with its freedom of movement and extensive transportation, logistics, and shipping networks, has made the Kingdom a target for smugglers, including those dealing in illicit goods such as weapons. As an open society, Thailand remains vigilant against smuggling and trafficking syndicates. Therefore, Thailand collaborates with other nations - including the United States - to maintain and strengthen its security.

Thailand has also considered building nuclear power plants to enhance its energy security, but the government has no immediate plans to pursue nuclear power development.

“Thailand has developed a robust framework to manage nuclear and other radioactive materials out of regulatory control,” said Carlos Nogueira, who led the assessment team.

“We appreciate the strong cooperation and commitment demonstrated throughout the mission, and we hope that the recommendations and suggestions provided will help the country further enhance its nuclear security regime for managing these materials,” Nogueira added.
