Five of Thailand's ministers who are women joined hands in a video campaign aimed at ending gender-based abuse in the Kingdom to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on November 25.
"It is everyone's responsibility to help each other out," said Industry Minister Pimphattra Wichaikul on the subject of violence in the workplace. "I know everyone is afraid, but if we have the courage to protect our colleagues, it will be a good start. I urge everyone to stop harassment in the workplace."
Also participating were Prime Minister's Office Minister Phuangphet Chunla-iad, Tourism and Sports Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol, Higher Education Science Research and Innovation Minister Supamas Isarabhakdi and Deputy Minister of Transport Manaporn Charoensri.
The Ministry of Social Development and Human Security produced and distributed the video.
The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women is a United Nations initiative. The UN says that "violence against women and girls remains one of the most prevalent and pervasive human rights violations in the world. Globally, an estimated 736 million women — almost one in three — have been subjected to physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence, non-partner sexual violence, or both, at least once in their life."
Not long ago, the Thailand Development Research Institute wrote that reports of domestic violence against women were rising. Such phenomenon, however, can be seen through both a negative and positive lens.
"While the rise in number of reported cases may be alarming, it is nevertheless a hopeful sign that more and more people are recognizing that violence against women, particularly done by their husbands or boyfriends, is not acceptable," the institute wrote.
