Bangkok’s Pride festival had a lot to be proud of. The event set a record by drawing over half a million celebrants from Thailand and across the region, as the Kingdom “cemented its status as Asia’s premier destination for LGBTQ+ tourism,” according to one newspaper.
The massive turnout bodes well for the government’s aspiration to become the host country for WorldPride 2030, a series of international LGBTQ+ events coordinated by the organization InterPride. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has thrown his weight behind Thailand’s bid to host the global event.
The Bangkok Pride festival has become a major regional tourism draw, according to Agoda, the global online travel service. Agoda reported that bookings for Bangkok during the event were strong despite it being the low season for travel, with the lion’s share of visitors coming from elsewhere in Asia.
In January 2025, Thailand became only the third country in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage. A diverse and tolerant Buddhist kingdom, Thailand has long accepted LGBTQ+ people in society although more conservative-minded Thais are reluctant to support the legal recognition of same-sex unions. Nonetheless, after several unsuccessful attempts, Thailand’s legislature approved a law last year.
Since then, the Kingdom has been enjoying the benefits of a rapidly growing “rainbow economy,” driven by businesses owned by or catering to the LGBTQ+ community.
Although Pride events and celebrations are taking place across much of Thailand during June—Pride Month—the highlight was the Pride Parade in Bangkok. The festive procession through the heart of the capital’s central business district featured floats, dance troupes, a 500-yard-long rainbow flag, drag queens in full costume and regalia, as well as marchers and displays advocating for greater rights and gender diversity.
“Across Asia - in Tokyo, Seoul, Manila, Taipei and Hong Kong - Pride celebrations have developed in different forms. Bangkok, however, has moved beyond being simply an open and welcoming travel destination, positioning itself as a regional symbol of Pride tourism and LGBTQ+ inclusion,” wrote The Nation newspaper.
