Bangkok is number one! The Thai capital is currently the top destination booked by international tourists on the Agoda travel website for the Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year, in 2024. Thailand is also the second-most-popular country destination for the holiday as Thai tourism continues its post-pandemic resurgence.

“The Lunar New Year period is a significant time for travel, and this year is no different,” said Enric Casals, Agoda’s associate vice president for Southeast Asia. “The travel industry will undoubtedly look forward to welcoming back more travelers from China this year.”

While Agoda did not release details on how many Chinese travelers are among those booking trips, it said the holiday is the peak travel time for tourists from mainland China. Thailand has been working hard to revive itself as a destination for that nation’s tourists.

Tourists from China are the largest group by nationality that generally visit the Kingdom. However, a slowdown in China’s economy has made its citizens more cautious about spending on non-necessities such as travel.

The Agoda website said, “Most outbound travelers are from South Korea, Singapore, China, Hong Kong, and Japan. They are visiting Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam, showcasing various cultural and leisure options. Bangkok, Tokyo, Seoul, and Osaka remain appealing, underscoring the region’s rich urban and cultural diversity.”

In addition, according to Agoda, Bangkok has overtaken Dubai as the preferred city for travelers from India. The surge in visitors from India began in November last year when Thailand adopted a policy of offering visa-free travel to Indian tourists.

“With Bangkok now leading over Dubai, and Pattaya rising in the ranks, it’s clear that Southeast Asia’s allure is growing stronger. The fact that many of these destinations can now be visited without having to worry about the paperwork will likely encourage even more Indian travelers to go abroad and explore,” Agoda said in a press release.
