Thailand is literally taking off. The Kingdom’s airports are driving a surge in aviation in Southeast Asia with three in the top ten and Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok leading the pack with over 400,000 passenger seats added in January, according to an industry website.

“The new year has ushered in a wave of growth for Southeast Asia’s aviation industry, with airports across the region experiencing a surge in international seat capacity,” wrote the Travel and Tour World website. “January 2025 marked a significant milestone, as the region not only saw an impressive boost in overall capacity but also witnessed key developments at major hubs and secondary airports.”

Thailand is emerging as a premier aviation hub in the region. As part of its ongoing multibillion dollar national infrastructure upgrade, the government has been devoting substantial funds to modernizing, expanding and upgrading the nation’s international and domestic airports.

Chief among them is New Bangkok International Airport, or Suvarnabhumi, the number one gateway for visitors entering or exiting the Kingdom. As far as increasing seat numbers, Suvarnabhumi led all others in the region with its capacity increasing by 16 percent over January last. year.

“Bangkok Suvarnabhumi secured its place as the region’s fastest-growing airport in terms of absolute seat numbers. Adding over 407,000 seats compared to January 2024, it remains a key hub for long-haul and regional flights. Thailand’s thriving tourism industry and its strategic position as a transit hub continue to drive this growth,” the website wrote.

Finishing in fourth place was Don Muang International Airport, also in Bangkok, which added 255,547 seats for an ever-higher percentage increase.

“Don Mueang Airport experienced a remarkable 39 percent surge in seat capacity, reflecting its role as a hub for budget airlines. The growing demand for affordable travel within Southeast Asia continues to position Don Muang as a crucial player in regional tourism,” the website wrote.

Right behind Don Muang was Phuket International Airport in fifth place with an increase of 191,196 seats.

“Phuket International Airport saw a 31% increase, driven by its enduring popularity among international travelers. The island remains a top destination, particularly for visitors from Europe and Asia, seeking its iconic beaches and tropical allure,” Travel and Tour World wrote.
