Thailand’s prowess in golf is becoming par for the course as the Kingdom’s women golfers won gold in the individual and team events at the Asian Games in Huangzhou, China, last week, while the men’s team scored silver medals.
The biggest surprise was pulled off by Arpichaya Yubol, ranked a lowly 206 in the world by the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA). Arpichaya stunned the field at the Games on Sunday by snatching the gold medal in the women’s golf individual competition with a 19-under total 269, edging out Aditi Ashok of India by two strokes.
“I'm so happy, and I made the Thai people proud that I can get two more gold medals," Arpichya said. “This is my first Asian Games and that I can get the gold medal makes me proud of myself.”
The Asian Games are the largest multinational athletic competition except for the Olympics, and they serve as a qualifying event for the next Olympic Games, which will be held in Paris in 2024.
Arpichaya's final round was good enough to also wrap up the women's team gold for Thailand. The Thai women carded a 34-under 542 aggregate, six shots ahead of South Korea, which took the silver, and bronze medal winner China.
The men's team of Phachara Khongwatmai, Atiruj Winaicharoenchai, Danthai Boonma and Poom Saksansin brought home the team silver medal after finishing with a 51-under 813.
The 19th Asian Games were held from September 23 to October 8 with over 12,000 athletes from 45 countries. As of October 4, Thailand was seventh in total medals with 46, including 10 gold medals. The Kingdom is also number one recipient of total and gold medals among all other Southeast Asian countries.
