Two fighting legends will face off in an exhibition bout for the ages in April as eight-time world champion boxer Manny Pacquiao of the Philippines will take on Muay Thai multi-time kingpin Buakaw Banchamek in a six-round match under international boxing rules.
Pacquiao is considered by experts to be among the all-time greats in boxing under the Marquis of Queensbury rules. At the same time, Buakaw is regarded as among the best Muay Thai fighters in the history of the sport. The combatants will compete at the weight limit of 154 pounds, which is the super welterweight division in Western boxing.
The Impact Arena in Bangkok will host the bout on April 20, with the winner pocketing $289,000. Billed as “The Match of Legends,” whoever prevails will also receive the “WBC Legend Belt” from the World Boxing Council, one of the main governing bodies of international boxing.
According to Rajadamnern Stadium website, Buakaw has fought in 280 matches in total, with a record of 241 wins (73 wins or 30% were knockouts), 24 losses, 14 draw, and 1 no contest. “Buakaw has participated in numerous prestigious Muay Thai and kickboxing competitions worldwide. He gained international recognition when he won the K-1 MAX World Grand Prix tournament in Japan in 2004 and successfully defended the title in 2006, the only fighter to ever do so, solidifying his status as one of the best Muay Thai fighters on the global stage,” the website wrote.
“Buakaw Muay Thai’s fighting style is characterized by explosive power, lightning-fast kicks, and a well-rounded skill set that includes strong punches, devastating Muay Thai knee strikes, and skillful clinch work. His performances in the ring have captivated audiences and earned him a massive following of fans both in Thailand and around the world,” the website added.
Buakaw has also been an ambassador for Muay Thai, actively promoting the sport and helping it gain recognition on the global stage. The Royal Thai Embassy brought him to Washington, D.C. in July 2023 to showcase Muay Thai to American audiences at the Sawasdee DC Thai Festival on the National Mall, an event to celebrate 190th anniversary of Thailand-U.S. diplomatic relations with over 30,000 participants.
