On 31 July 2023, Ambassador Tanee Sangrat met with Ms. Kimberly Bassett, Secretary of State of the District of Columbia. Both sides discussed ways to advance the sister city relationship between Bangkok and Washington, D.C., including in areas of economic development, cultural exchanges, technical cooperation, urban development, education, environment and waste management.
Both sides also discussed ways to enhance further the engagement on visibility of the Thai community in the DMV area, including Thai Town, as well as the collaboration plan between the Royal Thai Embassy and the District in organizing Sawasdee DC Thai Festival next year as an annual event in DC, and other upcoming activities.
Bangkok and Washington, D.C. established their sister city affiliation in 1962, when both became the other’s first sister city. Both sides also signed reaffirmation agreements in 2002 and 2012.
